Yankees Vs Red Sox: The Rivalry Renewed, Aug. 17
One of the best rivalries in sports and the best rivalry in baseball is back. This series could have big implications on this year’s playoff race. The Yankees currently sit two and a half games behind the Red Sox for second place and a sweep could catapult the Yanks squarely into a playoff spot. Did the Sox finally end their slump? Or were some much needed wins just because they were facing a much worse Orioles team?
New Pair of Socks?
This series should answer the question if these Red Sox are going to continue to fade or if they simply went through a slump and are now back on the upswing. Before a series with the Orioles, who could probably get beat by a select group of college teams right now, the Sox were slumping very, very hard going 4-12 in their 16 games before the Baltimore series. Needless to say, this series is a lot more important for the Sox than it is for the surging Yankees. Eovaldi will get the start in the first game of the double header and he himself is coming off a strong start after an extended period where he struggled. Before going seven strong only allowing one run, the Red Sox had lost five straight starts by Eovaldi. The Yankee lineup is hitting a combined .252 off Eovaldi in 127 at bats. Eovaldi has had the Yankees number this season. In four starts, he has not allowed more than two runs to the Bronx Bombers and has struck out six or more in each of those starts.
New Set of Pinstripes
This Yankees team was headed for disaster the first half of the season and heads were about to roll until the checkbook was opened at the deadline and new life has been injected into this team. The Yanks are 19-9 since the break, but this series has been all Red Sox this season as Boston holds a 10-3 advantage in the head-to-head series. Luis Gil takes the hill for the Yankees in game one. A young right hander with strikeout stuff but very little experience, only two starts on the year where the Yankees are 1-1 but Gil does have 14 K’s in those two starts and only three walks. With a win over the Angels, the Yankees will be riding the same three game win streak the Red Sox are and it will be all hands on deck for both sides.
Yankees vs Red Sox Pick: Under 7
Eovaldi has honestly owned the Yankee’s this season and outside of a few players, this Yankee lineup is the same that he has pitched well against this season. On the other hand, are you convinced after three games against the bad news Orioles that this Sox team has turned it back around? We’re going with the under in this game. There are question marks with both sides in this one, but the pitching and the pitchers have been the one constant in this head to head series. Over the last 10 games, the under is 8-2. Expect both teams to be on top of their game and play the under seven.
