Weekend Best Bets, July 31

I need a weekend break from the heaps and heaps of sports news that was poured down during the week because good lord that was coming in off the press left and right Monday thru Friday. Between the MLB Trade Deadline, the Big 12 fiasco, the Lakers trade, NBA Draft, and Olympics, way too much obscure shit was happening this whole week and I just want to sit back and bet on some games.

There isn’t all that much going on this weekend in the sports world outside of the MLB and people jumping hurdles in the Olympics. While we are on the topic of hurdles, wouldn’t you love to see someone eat crap a little bit more often than they actually do?

Anyways, I’ll make this short and sweet for you, I’ll give you some winners, and I’ll hope you’ll enjoy the riches with a beer in your hand.

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays – Boston +105 – Saturday
The Sox didn’t fare well against the Rays in the first game of the series on Friday night but Tampa threw a lefty against a Sox team that doesn’t hit them well and it worked. They are doing the same thing on Saturday but there is an exception. Ryan Yarbrough is taking the bump and he has been downright atrocious against the Sox. In his last outing against Boston, he went just two innings while allowing five runs on five hits and then got yanked. On the other side, Nathan Eovaldi for the Sox is dominant against Tampa. In his last three outings against the Rays, he’s pitched 15 innings, allowing just six earned runs. I like the value here on the moneyline and the pitching matchup certainly favors Boston in a game they must win.

Baltimore Orioles vs Detroit Tigers – First 5 Under 5 – Saturday
I love the first 5 bets and we are going with one on Saturday when the Orioles take on the Tigers in Detroit. The Orioles offense ranks just just 25th in wRC+ over the last 30 days and the Tigers are throwing rookie Matt Manning who has had a very promising season for Motor City. While the Tigers have been scoring runs lately, they are facing the Orioles and all bets fly out the window in terms of runs scored. I don’t love betting an UNDER but I do when it’s these two who are the ones involved.

France vs USA Women’s Basketball – USA -13.5 – Sunday
Ok…so the last time I predicted an American basketball team beating a French basketball team, it didn’t go over that well. But I am a country man and I have faith that this team can pull off a win. The women’s team is 2-0 so far in Olympic play and are coming off a blowout 86-69 win over Japan in their last game. Meanwhile, the French team is 1-1 and coming off a win against a Nigeria squad. The French just don’t have a roster that even compares to the US and this should be a 15-point game at the minimum.
