Denver Pioneers Basketball

Weekend Best Bets, Feb. 27

We are getting down to that sweet spot in college basketball where March Madness is just a few exits away, we’ve got to make a hard right turn to make the conference championships, and meaningless first three months of the regular season are in the rearview mirror.

With that being said, there is tons of great college basketball going this weekend and all these games mean a little bit more with the regular season getting ready to be wrapped up. On top of that, we’ve got a full NHL and NBA slate plus something called the Dixie Vodka 400 that I will be betting on.

College Basketball

Denver vs Omaha: Denver -1

Here is something interesting that I have recently noticed. There are no good college athletic programs that bear the name of a major city, I don’t know why but it is true. Fuck, Miami is excluded from that list, I just remembered that as I typed this. Anyways, Omaha clinched the last playoff spot in their crappy little conference last night and will now be resting most of their starters. Denver is going to be playing with an attitude as their postseason hopes are done and this is the final game of the season. Take them at -1 or better.

Florida State vs North Carolina: FSU -2.5

The Noles are on a historic run right now and they look like they cannot be beaten. The last time these two played was January 16 and the Noles won by 7 points. FSU is rolling into this game with a four-game winning streak and have been electric from three. Meanwhile, North Carolina is coming off a really embarrassing loss to Marquette. I think this game will be closer than the last matchup but this is not a Roy Williams team from the past that instills a ton of confidence in me.

NBA:

Utah Jazz vs Orlando Magic: Jazz -10.5

The Jazz are coming off a rare loss to the Miami Heat. That being said, they have still managed to cover in 10 of their last 12, the Magic have failed to cover in two straight games, and the competition talent of these teams could not be any further a part. The Jazz have proven they are the best team in the NBA for a reason and it is partly because they cover at such a frequent rate. I’m not scared off by their loss to Miami and I like this line even at a double digit spread.

Dallas Mavericks vs Brooklyn Nets: Nets -4

Have you watched this Nets team recently? They are riding an eight game winning streak into this game which is at home. The Mavs have been on the road since Thursday and are coming off a loss to the 76ers by 14 points. The Nets have covered in each of their last eight games and the Mavs have covered in just 4 of their last 16. Harden and Kyrie have a scary good synergy going about them right now and I love to ride the hot hand.

NHL:

Washington Capitals vs New Jersey Devils: WAS -135

The Devils have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the league this year and I don’t think anyone crazy changes tonight. The Capitals didn’t have a banner start to the season but have seemed to pick their heads out of their asses. I am not a huge fan of betting a negative betting line like this but it is hockey and it is just kind of the way it goes.

NASCAR:

We know it is that weird time in between football ending and baseball beginning when I am throwing a NASCAR pick out there. I like Denny Hamlin this weekend at +500 odds at the Dixie Vodka 500. I’ll be honest, I don’t know a lot about NASCAR but I do know that Hamlin won this track last June and has finished in the Top 10 7 times in his last eight outings at this track. Those numbers are good for me.
