Oliveira UFC 262

SGG UFC 262, May 14

For many years, fight fans have seen the rise of Michael Chandler in MMA leagues outside of the UFC. He impressed many in dominant fashion but some critics still believed he did not have the expertise to fight some of the top lightweights (155 lbs) in the UFC. The UFC then matched Dan Hooker, the #6 lightweight at the time, with Chandler in the co-main event behind Mcgregor vs Poirier 2. The three-time Bellator champ needed only 150 seconds to silence the doubters as he finally announced himself to the top of the lightweight division.

With Mcgregor and Poirier set to do a trilogy fight and Khabib Nurmagomedov retiring, the UFC went ahead and booked the lightweight title fight between #4 ranked Michael “Iron” Chandler (22-5) and #3 ranked Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira (30-8).

This should be a real interesting matchup, especially for gamblers. Chandler has a real small sample size in the UFC with just the one defeat over Hooker. Oliveira has an impressive 8 fight win streak and has all the confidence going into his first title fight. Charles Oliveira opens as a -134 favorite and Chandler a +110 underdog. Oliveira holds the UFC record for submissions with 14 and should be the favorite if the fight reaches the ground. Chandler has shown his wrestling abilities in Bellator many times but it is unknown whether he can handle Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira. I believe Chandler has the more explosive strikes and if he can continue to move forward in this fight he will tire Oliveira out and catch him with a knockout blow.

Analysis & Picks

The odds are pretty even on this title bout and because of that I’ll take my chances with the underdog. Oliveira has proven that he can hang with some of the top lightweights but Chandler’s explosiveness and pressure is going to be too much for him. There is a bit of a size discrepancy with Chandler at 5 foot 8 inches tall and Oliveira at 5 foot 10 inches tall. Oliveira is the favorite coming into this fight because of the win streak he is on and his experience in the UFC. I feel oddsmakers are unsure of what to think of Chandler due to his inexperience in the UFC octagon. What he has proven in Bellator will continue to transfer over to the UFC.

Michael Chandler +110

O/U 2.5 rds – Under (-180)

In the co-main event, the #5 ranked lightweight Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson (26-5) will match up against #9 ranked Beneil “Benny” Dariush (20-4-1). Tony Ferguson has proven to be one of the most dangerous and most unique fighters over the years. His fight style makes his opponents overthink the matchup and keeps them on their toes. Although, Ferguson is on a 2 fight losing streak and some believe his age is catching up to him. This is a big fight for Ferguson if he wants to make one last run at the division. His opponent Beneil Dariush is on a 6 fight win streak and is a sneaky fighter who continues to climb his way up the rankings. This should be a great co-main event with a lot of fireworks. We’ll see who’s the better man on saturday night.

This will be a great fight to lead up to the main event. Both fighters have strong standup games as well as wrestling and grappling. Unfortunately to many fight fans, I think Ferguson’s time in the UFC is slowly coming to an end and I think Dariush is not a good matchup for him. I am taking Beneil Dariush to win this fight via decision.

O/U 2.5 Rds – Over (-190)

In the second fight of the main card, Katlyn Chookagian will fight Viviane Araujo in a women’s flyweight bout. Chookagian has dominated most of the flyweight division and has sat as a top 3 contender for many years. She is facing her toughest test in an up and coming fighter in Viviane Araujo. The #7 ranked contender is getting her biggest fight against a top ranked fighter. Araujo is a good matchup against Chookagian and I believe she will top Chookagian in her ascent to the top of the division.

Viviane Araujo +115

O/U 2.5 rds- Over (-455)

In the fight that will open up this UFC 262 card, Shane Burgos will face Edson Barboza which should be an entertaining featherweight fight (145 lbs). This should be a fast paced fight with a lot of striking. Barboza is always dangerous but I think Shane Burgos will be too much for Barboza in this one.

Shane Burgos -141

O/U 2.5 Rds – Under (+140)
