Mavericks vs. Pelicans February 17

Kyle Barrette

What a comeback by the Brooklyn Nets, with Cam Thomas having a fourth quarter of a lifetime and a deep dagger three to cap off one of the biggest comebacks in Nets history. With that comeback win, we’re 8-2 for the month and look to add one more before the all-star break. We’re going out west for the Mavs and Pelicans games. The Mavs have been a team on a mission lately, and the Pelicans have added some firepower to their offense with the McCollum trade, so who has the edge here? Let’s break down this matchup and find out.

MGM NBA Offer

Pelicans:
The Pelicans found out that you don’t mess with a bear. The Grizzlies were able to establish a decent lead early and never looked back. The Pelicans struggled down the stretch, only scoring nine points over the last 4:34 of the game. If they thought the Grizzlies’ 14th ranked defense was tough, they’re in for a rude awakening tonight. Add the fact that the Pelicans’ season is slowly starting to slip away as they are currently the first team outside the last playoff spot by two games. The Pelicans’ remaining schedule after the all-star break is a gauntlet of playoff caliber teams where they will have to play their best basketball of the season to get in. Since the trade, they are 1-3 with the win starting to look more and more like an upset because the other team played themselves instead of the Pelicans beating them.

The Mavericks:
Now I know the thought process that some teams will just go through the motions because it’s the last game before the break, but we didn’t see that last night from teams in their last game before the break, and from what I’ve seen, that’s just not Luka’s style. He is a competitor and never takes a game off. Their offense remains a bit of a question mark as they are only averaging 106 points per game. What’s got them winning five of their last six games is their lockdown defense. Dallas has climbed to the second spot in points allowed with 102 per contest. Across their last three games, the average is below 100. The Pelicans are going to struggle to score points all night, which will lead to some frustration from a team that made a big trade and still can’t find a way to win.

Mavericks vs Pelicans The Pick: Mavs -3
The Mavs’ defense will cause the Pelicans fits, and their offense will be able to score on the below-average defense of the Pelicans. Take the Mavericks- 3.

Same Game Parlay:
Mavericks -2.5, Luka Doncic First Basket, Jalen Brunson Over 17.5 Points, Mavericks to win by 1-10 Pts and Mavericks Under 106.5 Points.
