The dog days of summer are upon us, and we’re headed out to Oakland for today’s pick. The A’s and their 3,000 faithful fans will host the Mariners tonight. The closing behind this play is the location and pitching matchup. Can the A’s get a win and maybe a few more fans? Or can the Mariners start to climb back in their division and fight for what will likely be a wild card spot? Let’s break it down.

Would you believe me that at this point in the season the A’s have under 10 home wins? Well they do, it’s eight. Go ahead, go look it up and come back. That’s right; they are 8-26 at home this season. Even worse, they are 1-10 as a home dog of +125 or more, and they are only 3-13 in the month of June. Kaprielian takes the hill today for Oakland and he is yet to record a win as he comes in 0-4 with a 6.31 ERA. Lately he has been getting shelled. In four of his last five starts he has allowed more than four runs. He has allowed nine home runs over his last six outings. Luckily for Oakland, the Mariners have been struggling at the plate, scoring only 11 runs over their last six games. Can the M’s break out here against Kaprielian?

It’s starting to shape up as a fluke season with how good they were last year. A lot of the same guys offensively are on this team. I mean, they got two hits in their last game and, as we stated above, 11 runs combined in six games. Talk about a slump. It’s pretty bad that a year after Texas blows their team up; they jump you in the standings. Gonzales takes the hill for Seattle tonight. It’s sad that he has pitched very well for them this year and the Mariners are 4-9 in games that he has started. That looks to be one glaring difference from last season. This year’s team cannot win the close games. Gonzales has only had one bad start since the end of April. Ironically, it was against Oakland. They got him for eight hits and five runs, but it was a game that Seattle ended up winning. Outside of that start, Gonzales has not allowed more than three runs in an outing since late April.

Mariners vs Athletics Pick: Mariners ML
I like nothing about the A’s. They have been going through the motions and wish this season would be over before it even started. This team hates playing at home and it shows. Honestly, I think they feel somewhat embarrassed to play in front of those small crowds. SEA is 5-1 after a day off, so hopefully it will do their bats some good.
