Live Betting

Live betting is the process of placing a bet on an event that has already started. The oddsmakers alter odds throughout the course of a game, depending on how likely or unlikely an outcome may happen. Predominantly, these odds will be available for bettors during a stoppage of the game.

Why make a live bet?

There are numerous reasons why bettors place live bets rather than or in addition to betting on the spreads prior to a game. Waiting for the live lines gives the bettor an advantage because he/she can get a feel for the pace of the game.

There is also the possibility that you have a read on how the game may start and want to sit back to find better value in a live line.

For instance, let’s say you think the Los Angeles Lakers will beat the Milwaukee Bucks, but believe there is a good possibility that the Bucks jump off to an early start. If the Lakers are 4-point favorites (-4) and the Bucks start the game up 22-14, then the live line will jump to around Lakers +2. Live betting would give you the opportunity to be patient, grab the Lakers as an underdog, and presumably watch LeBron James takeover late in the game.

In Super Bowl LIV, the Kansas City Chiefs started the game as 1.5-point favorites against the 49ers, but with 7:17 left in the 4th quarter, found themselves down 20-10. Due to the Chiefs’ deficit, the live line had them as 3.5-point underdogs. If you felt confident that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would spark a comeback, you could have grabbed them at +3.5. You would have ended up cashing without a sweat as the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV 31-20.

There is also the possibility that you were late to the ticket window or missed the deadline on your sportsbook to place your bet prior to the start of the game. As this used to be a frustration for bettors, you are now given the opportunity to explore live betting options and still get in on the action.

The main live betting options are moneyline, spread, and the Over/Under, but you are also given a plethora of other lines depending on the event and sport.

Live Betting Tips

It is important to stay composed and not rush into any plays as live betting is fast-paced. Having said that, live betting is not for everybody as some sports bettors struggle to keep up with a faster scale.

The key to placing live bets is to make sure you are watching the game. You have little to no time to do research when live betting so stay alert and start to go through scenarios of how the game will play out.

SGG suggests to wait for pauses in the game to steer clear of volatile fluctuations with live odds. Waiting for a stoppage gives you some extra time to ruminate and decide if it is a good bet without any possible fluctuations.

The most common live betting strategy is to back the favorite when they are losing. Oftentimes, you will see oddsmakers overreact to a run by the underdog, giving the favorite an enticing line. A team that is a -170 favorite prior to the game, may turn into a +110 underdog due to a deficit. If there is enough time to stage a comeback, it is often smart to wager on the initial favorite as they are the superior team. That said, make sure there are no injuries or foul trouble you are unaware of that may be the reason for the line shift.

Where can I live bet?

Nowadays, almost all sportsbooks offer live lines somewhere on their site. It should be easy to find as sportsbooks try to drum up the interest in live betting. Make sure you have good WiFi connection and beat those bookies!
