HOW TO WATCH WEEK 10 OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Mike Shara

How well did last week’s Radiohead/R.E.M analogy go over in trying to explain the schedule for college football’s coming weeks? For those who didn’t read this column last week, I recklessly stretched a comparison positing that Week 9’s schedule was like a really good opening act for a Week 10 schedule headliner that was, well…lackluster. Well, we’ve drank our pre-show beers, bought our $60 concert t-shirt and stood, nodding politely in our spot for a while now. When we tell the story at the office on Monday, will we have to exaggerate how good the show was or will we actually be glad we went?

‘Opening Act’ Week 9 certainly did its job and delivered the goods. Michigan State/Michigan lived up to the hype, with the Spartans needing a last-minute interception to hold on for a win in East Lansing. Ohio State and Penn State played a close one, and Auburn upset Ole Miss as the second-tier SEC teams continue to juggle for bowl game position behind the bullies from Georgia and Alabama. Elsewhere, AP Top 25 newcomers Pitt, San Diego State and Iowa State all lost to unranked conference rivals, sending all of them back to the wasteland of the unranked. Cincinnati remains unbeaten and have already begun mentally preparing to be screwed over by the CFB Championship folks and left out of the playoff final four in favor of a bigger revenue school from a Power Five conference. New to the AP Top 25 this week are Louisiana, Fresno State and Houston, who move all the way up to #20 after upsetting previously unbeaten SMU.

‘Headliner’ Week 10 is, frankly, going to need a few surprises to be memorable. There is limited intrigue on this weekend’s schedule, but there is hope. Michigan State, now in serious contention for a spot among the CFB Final Four, is looking at a classic possible letdown game as they go into West Lafayette to face an unranked Purdue team that has already upset Iowa, who were ranked #2 at the time and coming off a huge win themselves. West Virginia will try to upset another ranked Big 12 rival in consecutive weeks as they host Oklahoma State and #14 Texas A&M and #13 Auburn will face off to see which school can stay within one win of Alabama in the SEC West. There are also traditional rivalry games that are always interesting, even if both teams aren’t necessarily peaking this year: Tennessee/Kentucky,  LSU/Alabama and Oregon/Washington come to mind. It certainly could end up being a good weekend – just don’t leave before the encore to beat the traffic. No one wants to hang out with that guy.

All games below feature teams currently listed in the College Football Playoff Rankings (which will help explain why every college football fan in the greater Cincinnati area is pissed). All games are listed at EST. Check your local listings to see which games are available in your area.
