An early season showdown of what could be a potential finals matchup is headed to Dallas. The Mavs have started the season 4-2, but there is more than meets the eye with their record. The Heat have stormed out to a 5-1 start and are showing they have what it takes to be the top team in the east. There looks to be significant injuries on both sides coming into this matchup. So with the cards on the table, let’s have a look from each team’s perspective.

Miami is off to a near perfect start and looks to expand with a road win over the Mavs. Bam Adebayo will miss this game for the Heat. Miami was able to weather the storm without their big man against the Grizzlies notching a 129-103 victory. The Heat have one of the top defenses in the league only allowing 97 points per game. The Heat have only allowed two teams pass the century mark and it wasn’t by much. The offense continues to run through Jimmy Butler, who leads the team with 25 points per game. They have become one of the most talented and deepest teams with some offseason moves that landed them some solid veterans. When you have guys like Marcus Morris and Tyler Hero coming off the bench and giving you over 20 minutes each and a combined 30 points, there is a pause for concern for the rest of the league.

The Mavs have started out 4-2 this season, but the teams in those four wins have not exactly been playoff caliber. The bottom line is wins and losses, but the wins against the bad teams have not exactly made a statement like their losses to good teams have. The Mavs have lost their two games against teams that were in the playoffs last season and the results have not been close, one loss by 26 and the other by 31. The Heat fall into the category of teams that are going to give the Mavericks fits until they can figure it out. Adding to their troubles, Porzingis currently is scheduled to miss this game leaving the Mavs short a dynamic scorer against one of the league’s top defenses. The Mavericks have struggled to put up points like they had last season, and with an improved Heat team this could turn into a long night for the Mavs.

Mavericks vs Heat the Pick:
From a records perspective, I can understand why the Heat come into this game as the underdog, but from a numbers perspective, it’s an absolute gift from the sports books. Though, the line has quickly shifted to Heat -2. I do not think you see the Heat as small favorites in many of their games going forward, so I would enjoy it while it lasts. Take the Heat -2.
