Hangover Monday: The NHL Playoffs Are The Best, May 17

A lot of things happened this weekend. A lot of bets were made. A lot of bets were lost. A lot of bets were won. But there is really just one thing that sticks out from the entire weekend and it’s the fact that Lebron has to participate in the play-in tournament and there is a shot (it’s small) that the Lakers completely miss the playoffs.

It was a great weekend in the NBA, the FCS Championship was a total bust and I would like to blame the rain, Medina Spirit isn’t going to win the Triple Crown, and holy shit, playoff hockey is back and America remembered that it exists and may be the greatest postseason sport that we watch.

First and foremost, the FCS Championship was wild and also was delayed for over an hour because Texas got all the rain the world had to offer yesterday. Sam Houston State did a whole lot of nothing all game and the South Dakota State offense clearly struggled with the wetness. It took under 20 ticks to go for the Bearcats (not a real thing) to sling a touchdown pass to take a two-point lead over the Jackrabbits (also not a real thing).

The money was pouring in for South Dakota State in this game. The line opened up at 4.5 and by the time the game kicked off, it was already moved to 6 points. But those bettors, including me, took quite the spill when the rain started to fall and the Jackrabbits just could not move the ball to save their lives.

Next up, the Preakness was fun to watch unless you picked Midnight Bourbon who made you drink a glass of bourbon afterwards because HE ABSOLUTELY BLEW IT. Rombauer crossed the line first and  was a +1100 underdog in this one, but by god that pony could run. I haven’t seen anyone who has a Triple Crown bet (guessing all three main horse races correctly) still on the line, but after this horse racing season, congrats if you do.

NHL hockey came back this weekend and it truly was a blessing to watch because the hits, the goals, and the fights were absolutely outrageous. The best game of the weekend belonged to the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. We told you this weekend to take the Lightning in the series and man was it a battle for them in game one. Nine goals were scored, the Bolts netted two in the third to take the game and win, and the hits were insane.

The Panthers (+109) had most of the hande in this game and the OVER had 77 percent of the bets. That is good news and bad news and ultimately Vegas probably took about a split on this game. The goals should continue to pile up in this one and it’s going to be a fun series to watch.

The NBA play-in tournament begins on Tuesday. The Celtics (-1.5) will host the Wizards and the Pacers (-3) will host the Hornets. I hate the Eastern Conference so much because the Celtics are the only team out of all these four that are the only ones to actually have a record that is .500 and it is literally 36-36. On Wednesday, the Grizzlies (-3.5) host the Spurs and the Lakers (-4.5) will host the Warriors in what will be the best game of the tournament.

If you haven’t seen it by now, Damian Lillard basically promised a fan that he would get the Blazers to 42 wins. The guy who tweeted at him about needing the wins said that he bet the house. Dame kept up his part of the bet, hitting 42 on the last night of the season. However, this guy was full of shit, tweeting out the ticket that was only for $260 at -130 odds.

God bless the Knicks

I have been riding with the Knicks all season long and I am amped that they are in the playoffs. Even better, I am thrilled that they ended the year with a (45-26-1 ATS, 63.4%) record, which is the seventh-best ATS record in the last 30 seasons. I am going to continue riding this team like Bob Baffert is riding Medina Spirit.

Bruins/Capitals OVER 5.5 (+130)

After game one, I know this bet seems odd, but hear me out. These two teams were extremely physical in game one and just one penalty was called which is likely to be different this time around. Craig Anderson played a ridiculous game in goal last time out, which is odd because he sucked all year and that just isn’t going to happen again. You are getting great value at this price, book it.
