Hangover Monday: Ankle Braces, July 12th
I was extremely confident when I picked Dustin Poirier over Conor McGregor in their third fight. Did I think that McGregor was going to snap his ankle and go all Paul George/Gordon Hayward on us? I did not. But that’s what went down and it was crazy.
That was the biggest sports news of the weekend. McGregor talked a whole lot per usual before this fight and he is talking a lot after it. He called this an “illegitimate” win for Dustin. While I can agree to a certain point, the winner on the sheet at the end of the match is Poirier and for anyone who bet on Conor before this thing, they aren’t getting their money back.
In fact, a couple pretty massive bets were placed on The Notorious. William Hill took a $236,000 bet on McGregor before the fight. 52 percent of the moneyline bets came in on McGregor who was listed at plus money (+104). I think my favorite bet came in the form of trolling as Floyd Mayweather Jr. dropped $50,000 on Poirier. Of course, we all know the history between Floyd and Conor and there was no way he wasn’t going to be vocal about getting paid big time with Poirier winning it big time.
The other big ole event going down this weekend was Game 3 of the NBA Finals. I had the Bucks taking this game just because there was no way I saw them trailing 3-0 in the Finals. On top of that, the Bucks were 7-1 at home this postseason when they entered the game. They proved once again that they are dominant when playing on their own court and won this game 120-100. There was a reason that they went from big underdogs in Game 2 to heavy favorites overnight. Phoenix lit it up from the floor, shooting 48 percent but connected on just 29 percent of their threes. The bettor who dropped $500,000 on Bucks -4.5 for Game 3 (seriously) is having a very good Monday morning.
Giannis went off again, this time for 41 points. He also had a little bit of decent help this time around with Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday not playing like absolute bums which always helps the cause. Now we enter Game 4 in Milwaukee, and I oddly feel like the heat and the pressure is on Phoenix. I don’t want to face this Bucks team after two straight wins, even if it is back in Phoenix.
Pass it to the Italians
Congrats to Italy on winning the Euro Cup. The best and most depressing bet I saw from this action was the poor sucker who accidentally placed a $300 wager on Italy to win the World Cup….which takes place next year. He got the two events mixed up and now, instead of cashing in on the Euros, he has to pray to god that he has luck working on his side.
Hope you hit the LIVE bet
The New York Yankees are actually a train wreck. Like they truly, genuinely suck. But Sunday was the ultimate blow. That’s because they were leading the Houston Astros, in an already contentious series, by a score of 7-3 in the Ninth Inning. That was until the Astros went deep three times to defeat them 8-7. If you had that Astros LIVE moneyline bet entering the last inning, I hope you are heading to Vegas first thing this morning.
The MLB Home Run Derby is tonight and it should be pretty interesting given that the game is in Denver and the balls are going to absolutely fly. Shohei Ohtani is the favorite to win tonight, but when it comes to pure power, my money is on Joey Gallo. He is currently at +450 but has a swing made for Coors Field.
