Well, what a way to come back down to earth. The Marlins could not even get a run across, an embarrassing loss. Time to dust that one off and cash out the final play of the week. We’re headed to Chicago for a divisional matchup that got very tight before the break. The White Sox are hosting the Guardians. Both teams were in a good position leading up to the break. Let’s see which team can continue their climb to the top of the division.

6-4 over their last 10 heading into the break. They’ve closed the gap on the division-leading Twins to two games. The Guardians were a sub-.500 team on the road in the first half of the season. The Guardians’ pitching staff had an ERA almost a full point higher on the road compared to home starts in the first half. The break also disrupted a three-game winning streak the Guardians were on. Today they are sending Cal Quantrill to the hill. Quantrill was solid for most of the first half, then kind of fell off the rails for a few starts, and capped his first half off with a shutout. In his struggles leading up to the break, one of those games was against the White Sox. Quantrill allowed four runs and a homer in an eventual Guardians win. He has seen the Sox twice this year and is 1-1 and has allowed four runs and a homer each time.

White Sox:
I think this team is probably the most excited to have the first half of the season behind them and to get a little bit of time off. In a first half that was riddled with injuries and rusty play, the second half is starting to look bright. The scary part was that through the injuries and the bad play, this team was never that far out of it, maybe five games at most. Even with some key starters still out, they were still able to take three out of four games from the division-leading Twins to end the first half. Also faced with one of the tougher schedules of the first half, the schedule in the second half gets a lot easier for the Sox. They have three starters that are on the brink of returning. Look for a big second half. Giolito takes the hill today for the Sox. He too had a good first half with a stretch of some bumpy starts. The home runs are a bit concerning, but considering the schedule they are going to be playing, he will get it under control. Giolito faced the Guardians twice this season, only allowing one run in both games combined and the Sox winning both.

White Sox vs Guardians pick: White Sox-.5 F5
There is a lot of data between these two teams as they played nine times before the break. The Guardians hold a 6-3 lead in the series but an 0-2 record in this exact pitching matchup. The White Sox hit Quantril well, and the Guardians couldn’t hit Giolito very well. Take the Sox to have the lead after five.
