GRIZZLIES VS SPURS, JAN. 26

Kyle Barrette

Fresh off a nail-biting win, we move on to today and hopefully continue to turn our luck around. Today we shift our focus out west for a matchup with the Grizzlies and the Spurs. For a good stretch, the Grizzlies were one of the best teams in basketball, but as of late, they have hit a .500 slump. The Spurs snapped a two-game losing streak last night with a monster 30-point win over the Rockets. So will the Grizzlies break out of their average funk, or will the Spurs win their second game in a row? Let’s break it down and find out.

Spurs
It’s been a season to forget for the Spurs. They come into this game with an 18-30 record and will most likely miss the playoffs this year. This team has a lot of young talent but has yet to get everything going. Like many young teams, the offense has not been an issue. This is actually a top 10 offense and puts up an average of 110 points per game. It’s on the defensive side where things start to fall apart, as they rank all the way down at 23 and allow just as many points as they score at 110. This team has not figured out how to beat the top tier teams in the league. If you look closely, most of their wins come against teams at the bottom of the standings, and the top tier teams are beating them handily. This team has a lot of potential, starting with a guy in Murray that almost averages a double-double every night.

Grizzlies
The Grizzlies haven’t played in almost three days after they suffered their second loss to the Mavs in a span of two weeks. This team is still a little banged up, but they do look like they will get a starter back tonight in Desmond Bane and a role player in Brandon Clarke. Bane’s three-point shooting and active hands on the defensive end could be the spark the Grizzlies need to get back on track. This team is also looking to get Kyle Anderson back later this week and starter Dillon Brooks within the next two to three weeks. The Grizzlies enter this game with a defense right in the middle of the pack, ranking 15th and allowing 108 points per game. Their offense is a top 10 offense and has been the root of their success this season, as they rank six, putting up 111 points per game.

Grizzlies vs Spurs Pick: Grizzlies -4
I’m not going to lie; this line makes no sense and has me worried. What I see playing out is the Spurs picking up where they left off last night and coming out running, catching the Grizzlies’ middle of the pack defense off guard and this game being close where the Spurs are leading slightly at half and then the Grizzlies coming back and eking out the cover. In the end, Memphis is the best ATS road team in the league by far, covering the spread in 69% of their road games.
