Grizzlies vs. Pelicans February 15

Kyle Barrette

The deadline has come and gone, the WOJ bombs have dropped, and we’re going to visit one of the blast sites with tonight’s pick. The Pelicans were able to get CJ McCollum from Portland in one of the trades that is already paying off for them. The team just looks a lot better, especially from the offensive side of the ball. They had an impressive win last night over Toronto. Will that continue tonight with an even more impressive victory over the Grizzlies? Let’s break down this matchup and find out.

It has only been three games, but McCollum is looking like the piece that was missing from this Pelicans offense. In his first game, he finished third in points scored, but in the last two games he has told Ingram to hold his beer and has led the Pelicans in scoring. It really hasn’t been close and he dropped 36 against the Spurs. Their defense has not necessarily improved along with their offense, though. The Miami Heat rolled in and were producing around the same amount of points per game as their average. The Spurs then hung 124 on them, and the Raptors just played an awful game. Toronto shot slightly better than 30%, had 19 offensive rebounds, and scored only 13 points off 14 Pelicans turnovers. This Grizzlies team will be the biggest test for this new look Pelicans team. This will also be the second night of a back to back, so we’ll see how they can handle themselves.

This team just finds ways to win. The Grizzlies come into this game finding themselves on the winning side of eight of their last nine, and the one loss was an OT loss to the Sixers. Offensively, this team has been unstoppable in the month of February, scoring 120+ in each of their five games and going over 130 in three of them. Two of the defenses that were played on this scoring run are ranked better than the Pelicans’ defense. The Grizzlies currently rank fourth in the league for points per game, but it is a really tight race between one and five; only a few decimal points separate those teams. Morant has been designated as a game-time decision, but signs are still optimistic he will play.

Pelicans vs Grizzlies the Pick: Over 227
With Morant’s status even in question and the Pelicans on their second night of a back to back, a total is a way more secure play than a side here. The Pelicans’ defense just gave up 124 to the Spurs, and the way this Grizzlies team has been lighting it up, that number should be reached easily, especially with the Pelicans on a back-to-back. The new offense of the Pelicans should continue their success and make this one go over. Take over 227.
