Degens Only: Tuesday Plays, Feb. 16

I know it’s way too early in the season, but can we talk about it for just a minute? Who saw the Utah Jazz being the top team in the NBA at any point this season? From what I can recall, last year was filled with rumors and beef between Mitchell and Gobert that ended with them getting bounced out of the first round of the playoffs after losing three straight to the Nuggets. This offseason saw Mitchell and Gobert publicly mend their relationship as the Jazz went all in on the big man, signing him to a massive deal making him one of the top 10 highest paid players in the NBA.  The Jazz have not looked back this season and have been rolling over all the competition and have stormed out to an NBA best 23-5 mark. After winning their eighth straight last night, all teams be warned this ship does not seem to be slowing down any time soon.

In other NBA news Blake Griffin is done in Detroit. The two sides have announced that he will no longer suit up for the pistons and his agent and the team are working on either trading the six time all-star or buying him out making him a free agent. His contract makes it a tough move for Detroit, but given the right situation, it could work out well for all sides. As Griffin waits to see what the future has in store for him, let’s wait no longer and get into Tuesdays top four plays.

X Marks the Spot: Xavier +2.5

I probably have played more basketball in the last month then Xavier has. That hasn’t stopped the Musketeers though. This team is truly resilient. They played their first game back after their second Covid-19 related break. Although they fell asleep late vs Connecticut, this team has convincing wins against some quality competition. They have already defeated this St John’s team back in January by eight points and are now a two and a half point underdog just seems off to me. A 10.5 point swing to cover is a big number for this St. Johns team who was held to their lowest point total of the season last time out against Xavier. Add that to a shaky St Johns defense, things start to look better for Xavier. So far this season, Xavier is 9-0 VS. defenses ranked outside the top 75.  St. Johns is ranked 109. Back the musketeers to bounce back and take Xavier +2.5.

Vegas Always Wins: Avalanche Team Total under 2.5

If you’re a fan of hard hitting defense then this game is for you. Both teams come in sporting a goaltender that has been a brick wall. Fleury has a 1.3 GA/G and Grubauer has a 1.6 GA/A. The Knights have held teams under the posted total in nine of their 13 games this season. The Avalanche come into this game having played only two games in the whole month of February. Barely playing over the course of two weeks and having to come back against the best defense in the NHL hasn’t been an easy task as we could see in their first game back where they were shut out. Colorado is also dealing with a fair amount of injuries, possibly leaving them even more shorthanded. This game should have few goals, go with the Avalanche team total under 2.5

Pet Peay: Austin Peay First Half -3.5

Austin Peay has been a dominate first half team over the last month and a half. Even in games in which they ended up losing they still covered this spread in the first half. Since the beginning of January, Peay has covered the posted spread in nine of 11 games. Expect them to get off to another fast start against Southeast Missouri states 230th ranked defense that just allowed them to pile up 42 first half points in Saturdays game. Austin Peay first half -3.5

Join the Joker: Nuggets +2

The Celtics have gone completely downhill losing four of their last five. Their offense has been nonexistent failing to eclipse the 100 point mark in two of those games. Two of those losses have come against bad teams in the Wizards and the Pistons. After a double digit loss to the lowly Wizards the Nuggets are probably a team that the Celtics do not want to see. The Nuggets come into this game having won three straight games. Their fifth ranked offense is going to be too much for this slumping Celtics team to keep up with. Somehow the Celtics are the favorites in this one so grab the extra points and take the Nuggets +2
