Chicago Blackhawks

Degens Only: Friday Plays, Mar. 5

This must be what MJ felt like in the 90’s, when he went back-to-back. Alright I’m done being cocky, but all bets are off if we sweep the entire week. The NBA all-star break is here, and that means one thing, we get to see Lebron practice his annual GM role for his life after basketball as he was once again was named captain of the all-star team and got to complete his draft. There might have been some underlying beef as Lebron made some strong comments about the Utah Jazz as a team and a couple of its star players. It might be all fun and games, but I’m not sure the NBA’s best team at the halfway point needs any more fuel for their fire, but they sure got some last night. For a guy that was all bah hum bug about even having to play an all-star game, James sure looked like a different person last night as he looked to be having a great time soaking up the spotlight on TV once again.

So, unless you have been living under a rock recently, you should know that sports cards have made a huge comeback and are beginning to fetch some extreme value. We all know about “Vegas Dave” selling his Mike Trout card for almost four million dollars (and I thought I had spending issues). Recently the news broke that the record for the most expensive football card had been broken by nearly 500,000. A Tom Brady signed rookie card just sold for a little over 1.3 million, and no that’s not a typo,  A piece of signed cardboard for over a million dollars!!! The cards can be graded on a scale of 1-10, and this one was only an eight, and it still got over 1.3 million.  Time to check your attics folks. Let’s see if we can help you inch closer to that million-dollar mark.  Let’s get into today’s plays.

Lightning Strikes Twice: Blackhawks Team Total Under 2.5

I said it once, and I’ll say it again…it’s the 85 Bears defense, but on ice. It’s been really impressive to track the Lightning’s defensive dominance. How dominant you ask? Five goals allowed over their last six games. That’s right, they have played more games in that stretch then they have allowed goals. These two teams just played their third game of the season and the lightning has won them all, in addition, they have held Chicago under two goals in all three. Anyone else smell a repeat? Take the Lightning to put the clamps on once again and play Chicago’s team total under 2.5.

Toledo Time: Toledo/Ball St over 153

Pretty steep number here, but there are some factors coming into this one that I think make up a perfect storm so to speak. Let’s start with Toledo’s home court dominance. Toledo is 11-1 at home this season averaging 82 points. Next, we have Ball State just absolutely lighting the score board up lately, scoring 90+ in their last three games. Toledo comes into this game off a surprising loss to Central Michigan; a game where they were a 17 point favorite. Toledo does not want to head into the tournament losing back to back games where they were double digit favorites expect a good effort out of them today. Don’t think Toledo has forgotten the embarrassing loss they suffered about a month ago to this Ball State team, another game they were a big favorite but ended up getting embarrassed and losing by 14. Take the over 153 with a motivated Toledo and on fire Ball State offense.  This total is ready for blastoff.

Bear Attack: Missouri State Team Total over 70.5

These two teams played twice this season with Missouri State winning both games by double digits. This total is pretty low, even though Valparaiso has been playing some better defense, letting a team score almost 80 points in back to back games to holding them under 71 is a decent swing. The fact that Missouri State was able to score over this number against better ranked defenses than Valparaiso’s is also a good sign for the Bears in this one. With this being game one of the MVC tournament, I expect Missouri State to be firing on all cylinders in this one. Take Missouri state team total over 70.5.

Dominate Drake: Drake 1H -3

This is another good spot; Drake is coming into this tournament off a loss and with a 24-3 record that can’t sit well with them. Northern Iowa had a pretty good run to end the season playing a close game vs this Drake team and winning three straight. Drake is averaging 35 points in the first half and Northern Iowa 31, but the level of competition was not the same. Drake was able to beat Northern Iowa by double digits in the first half of their first meeting and I expect this one to play out more like that game as Drake had a few injuries in the second matchup. Look for Drake to set the tone early and come out to a decent lead at half, take Drake 1H -3.
