CUBS VS ROCKIES APRIL 14
Another successful day on the diamond as the Mets were able to take care of business in the first five innings against the Phillies. I’ll be the first to say that Aaron Nola is a bit overrated. Scherzer got the job done, but everything looked off and he threw some unusual walks. Today we are headed out west to Coors Field, where our play today is in the Rockies and Cubs game. Nobody expected these two teams to start with winning records, but that’s exactly what we’re getting today. The Rockies are sending Kyle Freeland to the hill today, and the Cubs counter with Justin Steele. Which one of these teams is going to continue their hot start? Let’s break down this matchup and find out.
The Cubs took the opening series from the defending division champs, and looked impressive doing it, scoring four or more runs in each of the first three games. The offense hit a wall though in their last series with the Pirates as the Cubs were only able to put up two runs in each game but were lucky enough to split the short series. Steele takes the hill for the Cubs today, the 26-year-old lefty had a good start to his season going five innings and striking out five and not allowing a run. Steele has never pitched at Coors Field and has only faced the Rockies once. It did not go well for him as he only lasted just over three innings giving up five hits and allowing four runs. It will be interesting to see if Steele can carry the momentum he carried over from a good finish from last year’s season and a good start to this one into an environment that he has never been in against a team that has hit him hard before in a park that is known for a lot of runs.
How about the start for these Rockies? After a completely awful year to forget last season, they have at least started the season on top. It is early, but it must give this team a ton of confidence to start the season like this and to beat the Dodgers on top of it. Freeland takes the bump today after a first start to forget where he allowed five runs to the Dodgers and was only able to go just over three innings. The only positive was that Freeland was able to strike out six batters in that short span. The Rockies will have a good advantage today because they are playing at home, they smashed left-handed pitchers last season and are smashing lefties again this season, and they have already faced Steele at least once.
Rockies vs Cubs Pick: Rockies First Five Team Total Over 2.5 runs
It’s Coors Field, so you know the runs are going to come. The Rockies hit lefties extremely well. Give me this small total of runs with those two factors any day. Take the Rockies’ F5 team total over 2.5.
