Horses racing in The Derby

Best Bets: The Derby, May 1

Now that Day 3 of the NFL Draft has started you can put away the very last of your stimulus that you’ve been betting bite size chunks of and focus on something else. The Draft has been a ton of fun to bet on and the first round was very profitable, throwing the big money where it made sense.

But on Saturday, there are plenty of bigger events than the Draft and the biggest out there is the Running of the Roses, the Kentucky Derby. There may be no better betting event than the Derby and it brings out every star, athlete, and massie bettor in the game. I mean, for fucks sake, Mattress Mack is throwing around a couple million today. We really need an investigative piece as to how a couple of lazy boys and couches made Mattress Mack his fortune.

In this race, there is one horse that is gaining all the attention. Usually horses in the race, even the favorite, are no better than about a 3/1 – 4/1 favorite, but this year is different. I’ll tell you who I am betting on as the favorite to win, my second favorite to win, and then of course, the horses you must bet on because their names are absolutely amazing.

Bet the Favorite: Essential Quality (2-1)

He is the undefeated Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and the horse that you should seriously throw some money on if you’re looking to win some coin on plus money. When it comes to horse racing, it is intriguing to throw it on the horse that is a 50-1 underdog but not in this case. Mattress Mack is throwing $2 million on this horse which means you need to get your bet in before the line massively shifts. Statistically, this is a good bet for you as only one favorite has finished out of the money (worse than third) since 2012.

Bet to Show (Must finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd): Hot Rod Charlie (+220)

Hot Rod Charlie has a few things going for him. 1) what a fucking name. 2) this is a horse that could actually pull an upset so getting plus-money to potentially place third is huge. 3) look at his fucking name. But seriously, Hot Rod Charlie has Doug O’Neill as his trainer who has been on two winners of the Derby in the last 10 years. He has a a second- and third-place finish, in addition to winning the Louisiana Derby.

Bet to Show (Must finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd): Rock Your World (+130)

Rock Your World is 5-1 to win the Derby so it isn’t crazy to think that this horse could place as low as third. Rock Your World runs really hard and should have no problem actually building a lead in the first part of this race. The hope with this horse is that he can build a lead and just stick around long enough to lose it and place in the top three.

The Name Bets

Okay, you really shouldn’t follow this one as seriously but I will lose it if one of these horses win and I didn’t place any money on them because their names are just way too good to pass up. Give me, Soup and Sandwich (30-1), Hidden Stash (50-1), Midnight Bourbon (15-1 and probably the coolest horse in the race), and Like the King (60-1).

MLB Batter Props

It is a Best Bets Saturday which means you are getting a Best Bets Batter Prop. I am taking Nick Castellanos today from the Reds. His OVER 1.5 is at (+120) and he is hitting .305 right now and has extra-base hits in three of his last five games. Facing Zach Davies today, he is hitting .375 off of him in eight at-bats and a home run.
