Best Bets: FCS Championship, May 15
Happy weekend, degenerates. I am currently sitting on my couch, it is Friday at 10:26 pm and I am watching the Warriors without Steph, Draymond, and Wiggins take on the Pelicans without Lonzo, Zion, and Hart. Why am I watching this already mediocre game made even worse by the lack of the only stars on each team not playing? Because I bet Golden State -2 and I am getting ready to physically vomit if Nico Mannion doesn’t get his shit together, ASAP. By the way, praise my lord and jesus, Jordan Poole who has 32 points before the fourth even begins.
If that opening paragraph doesn’t scream, “welcome to the weekend,” then I’m not sure what does. I’ve got my whiskey to the right of me and I am ready to give you some winners this weekend because the summer is going to be filled with drinking and the bar tab isn’t going to be cheap. You can either grab a second job or start throwing it all on the New York Knicks, and I am a fan of the latter.
I wish it was Coach Prime
The biggest event actually happening this weekend is one that most of the country doesn’t care about whatsoever. The FCS Championship is here and we have South Dakota State taking on Sam Houston State. This is the ultimate “ask the bartender to throw this game on and reveal to all your friends what a degenerate you really are” game.
South Dakota State is favored by 4.5 points and if I am giving it to you straight, I think they are going to win. I can’t be absolutely sure because it’s the FCS and I am not going to sit here and act like I am a die-hard fan of bad football, but there are some good stats to back it up.
South Dakota State is the number one seed in the tournament, (which is sick, by the way) and they just absolutely dominated a pretty good Delaware team by a score of 33-3. They allow under 300 yards per game on defense, they have 12 interceptions, and their the most efficient red-zone defense in the country.
Sam Houston State had to literally pull off the impossible to get here by coming back from a 24-3 deficit at the half last week. But, the team averages just aren’t there for the Bearcats compared to the Jackrabbits and 4.5 is practically nothing to be laying. I am all on the South Dakota State -4.5 train.
The NHL Playoffs begin this weekend and if you are buying into series prices, bow is the time to get them. (Side Note: I’m gonna kill Nico Mannion)
My favorite bet is Tampa Bay Lightning (-140) over the Florida Panthers. Here is the reason why. The Lightning are getting back Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov for this series. They have both been out nearly the whole damn season and they are both top-10 players in the league when they are playing at their best. The Panthers had recent success against the Lightning but that was with a really banged up Tampa roster.
I don’t love that this isn’t plus-money either, but there is a great break-even percentage here. The break-even percentage is 58 percent, which is a fancy way of saying that the best has to hit half less than 50 percent for you to win your money back on it. I am all about those odds.
I am a generous dude so I am also giving out a daily-NBA wager. I have said it before and I will say it again, I love the New York Knicks (-5). I am enamored with the way this team can cover a spread. They just barely missed out on covering two nights ago, but they are back with another great line at -5 against a Hornets team that had covered in just 2 of their last seven. The Knicks are excellent at home as a favorite and I am happy to be them again here.
